Bio
He is a Senior Lecturer of Sports Management and Leisure Studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. He teaches Management of Sports Facilities, Human Resources and Sports Events and Leisure and Sport Recreation (at graduate level) and on Accessibility at Sport Facilities and Events and Corporate Social Responsibility in Sport (at postgraduate level). He earned his PhD in sports management in the Institute of Sport and Leisure Policy at Loughborough University, UK in 2000. His research interest includes sport facilities and event management, commercial development and accessibility provision of stadia and events, the economic impact of sport events and Corporate Social Responsibility in sport, both from theoretical and applied perspectives.
He has been published in leading academic journals in urban planning, sport management and tourism field, including American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Sport in Society, Soccer & Society, Urban Affairs Review, Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, Sport, Business, Management: An International Journal, Cuadernos de Turismo, The Age of Human Rights Journal, Revista de Educación and Revista Española de Sociología. He has being a co-editor as well as author of the Routledge Handbook of Sport and Corporate Social Responsibility (with Kathy Babiak, University of Michigan and Geoff Walters, University of London) that offer a comprehensive survey of theories and concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility as applied to sport. As part of his interest on accessibility provision for people with disabilities and more recently older people at stadia in Europe and worldwide, he has published different studies in peer-reviewed journals, chapters and books (including collaborative work with academics and practitioners such as Carlos Campos, Simon Darcy, Paul Kitchin, Geoff Walters, John Grady, Phil Downs and Geoff Walters). His research has also allowed him to work with organisations such as LaLiga, Manchester United FC and Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association (MUDSA) and Real Automovil Club de Catalunya (RACC) and DeStadUtrecht (City Council of Utrecht). So far, as research leader he has been involved in different projects analysing the needs of spectators with disabilities and older fans in different sports facilities including UK, German and Spanish stadia, the economic impact of the World Rally Championship, the role and competencies of the Disability Liaison Officer on Sport Facilities and Events: North American and European Perspective, evaluating the image of the City of Utrecht linked to the Tour of France 2015. He has been working on an European project, leaded by Dr Paul Kitchin, University of Ulster, analysing the engagement of disabled people in European football.
He has been a reviewer for the following journals: Business & Society, European Sports Management Quarterly; Sport in Society; Soccer and Society, Public Relations Inquiry, Revista Cuadernos de Economía (Spanish Journal of Economics and Finance), International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing, Corporate Governance; Motriz and Revista Internacional de Ciencias del Deporte (Journal of Sport Science), Managing Sport, Leisure and Communication &Sport and Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility.
