Bio
Joy V. Goldsmith, PhD, is a Professor of Health Communication at the University of Memphis. She conducts communication research examining family caregivers, providers, patients, health literacy, and communication interventions. For over a decade she has contributed to research teams working to improve patient, caregiver, and provider communication challenges in chronic, advanced, and terminal illness, specifically examining ways in which health communication shapes outcomes for all health stakeholders. She is co-creator of the COMFORT model and curriculum, which provides COMFORT-related communication research and training information and offers provider, patient, and family resources. She directs the Center for Health Literacy and Health Communication at the University of Memphis and serves as an Affiliate Faculty member in the School of Public Health. Oxford University Press has released two volumes co-authored by Dr. Goldsmith in 2020, Communication in Palliative Nursing (2nd ed.), and Caring for the Family Caregiver.
