At the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology he developed a UHV-STM laboratory for nanofabrication on silicon surfaces. The discovery of the giant deuterium isotope effect in his laboratory extended his interest into the area of hot carrier degradation in MOS devices. He has authored or coauthored over 115 publications and has four patents. His current research interests include nanoelectronic device fabrication, molecular and carbon nanotube electronics, and atomic scale heterointerface characterization.,Dr. Lyding is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Vacuum Society (AVS) and a Member of Sigma Xi, the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
