Graduated in Philosophy in 1984 with an extraordinary prize and the third National Degree Prize, he specialised in Social Anthropology. He read his doctoral thesis (Cum Laude) in 1989 (University of La Laguna, ULL) with a comparative work on fishermen's populations in the Canary Islands.
In 1985 obtained a research grant from the Ministry of Education (number 1 at the ULL). In 1987 obtained the position of Curator of the Ethnographic Museum of Tenerife, and in 1993 the position of Associate professor. He is currently a full professor of Social Anthropology at ULL. He is currently Director of the University Institute of Social Research and Tourism at ULL.
Among his most significant publications is the book "Entre el mar y la tierra, los pescadores artesanales canarios", a text which won the Marqués de Lozoya prize from the Ministry of Culture in its 1990 edition. He has published scientific articles in high impact international journals such as Marine Policy, Ocean & Coastal Management, Human Ecology, Journal for Nature Conservation, Frontiers, etc. He has more than 70 published papers and more than 1600 citations using Google Scholar as a source. It has recently published the edited volume (25 countries, 75 authors, more than 600 pages): Pascual-Fernández, J. J., Pita, C., & Bavinck, M. (Eds.). (2020). Small-Scale Fisheries in Europe: Status, Resilience and Governance. Cham: Springer.
He has led four national research projects on marine resource conservation policies, tourism and small-scale fisheries. In addition, he has participated in European projects such as Fishgovfood (U. Amsterdam), the Femmes project on women's activity in the fisheries sector, or the Empafish project on marine protected areas. He has been until 2019 the coordinator for Europe together with Maarten Bavinck (Univ. of Amsterdam) of a global project on small-scale fisheries funded by the SSHRC of Canada, "Too Big to Ignore: Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries Research, TBTI (http://toobigtoignore.net/)". He coordinates at ULL the Interreg Macarofood project (2017-21), also the H2020 FoodE - www.foode.eu- (2020-24) and has been the coordinator of WP6, fisheries governance, in the COST Ocean Governance for Sustainability network - challenges, options and the role of science. In total, he has participated in more than 30 competitive research projects and more than 20 contracts, primarily as PI or coordinator at ULL.
He coordinates the research group PESCATUR (Fishing, tourism and natural resources management) at the ULL, and the lines of research developed in recent years are related to fishing (professional and recreational), tourism, governance studies, blue growth and human activities in the sea, management of coastal areas, etc.
