Bio
José Maria Santos completed his PhD on 2004 (thesis title: Effects of river regulation on fish assemblages in Central and Northern Portugal and the role of fish passes) by the School of Agriculture (Instituto Superior de Agronomia, ISA), University of Lisbon. He is an Assistant Professor and has been developing research mainly in Ecohydraulics, Water Resources, Environmental Hydraulics and River Restoration and Modelling. He has 61 articles in ISI web of Science (h-index = 23), with an accumulated impact factor of 185,21 and more than 1050 citations (excluding self-citations). He has 26 articles in international conference proceedings and is author of 3 books/book chapters, 4 articles in national journals and of 20 articles in national conference proceedings. He is also author of 132 oral communications (6 by invitation) and panels, at international (114) and national (18) meetings. Top Peer-reviewer and Excellent reviewer from Publons (see profile @ https://publons.com/a/1143178/) with more than 210 reviews for 53 journals. He belongs to the Editorial Board of Water (ISSN 2073-4441) and the Journal of Ecohydraulics (ISSN: 2470-5365), where he is Associated Editor. He is also the Guest Editor of 3 Special Issues: in Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050), Water and in the Journal of Ecohydraulics. He currently coordinates an FCT exploratory project (IF/00020/2015) targeting the development of holistic fishways to restore fish passage, which followed the FishMove (PTDC/AGR-CFL/117761/2010), that he also coordinated. He is presently the Co-PI of the EcoPeak4Fish project funded by FCT, aiming to assess the effects of hydropeaking in cyprinid species, propose a flow-refuge prototype and assess its cost-effectiveness, and develop a framework to adapt the hydropower operation scheme to maximize profits and environmental benefits for a sustainable use of hydropower energy. He participated in 3 European projects and 8 national projects with research and development typology. He also participated in 12 knowledge transfer projects, most recently in the role of Responsible, financed by EDP. He supervised 3 PhD theses and co-supervised 4 MSc dissertations. He organized 10 scientific events (3 international), is member of 2 specialized committees (1 as President) of the Portuguese Association of Water Resources and coordinated 1 international workshop on Fish Passage and Barriers. He was member of the scientific committee of 3 international conferences. He is member of the Executive Board of the Forest Research Centre (a research unit funded by FCT). He has received 7 distinctions, being the last one (2020), the ULisbon/CGD Scientific Award in the area of Agronomy.
