Researcher 1 (or equivalent) of CNPq since 1985, 1-A, then 1B (2006), 1C (2011 to 2016). Agronomist-UF-Viçosa (1962), MS Phytopathology UFV (1964), FIRST BRAZILIAN with MsC (1968) and PhD (1970) in Phytopathology at Univ. Of California – Davis. Second Brazilian to get a PhD in Plant Pathology in the entire USA. Full academic life at University of Brasilia (UnB), starting as Associate Professor (1971), Full Professor (1985); Emeritus Professor (2012). DIRECTOR of the Inst. of Biological Sciences-UnB (1972-1978), responsible for the assembly of two academic nuclei that resulted in today´´´´ s Deps. of Plant Pathology (External grant: US$ 500,000, EMBRAPA-1975) and Ecology (External grant: US$ 1,500,000.00 FINEP-1976). Member of the Comm. of Agrarian Sciences-CNPq (1980-1982). Main responsible for the transfer to the UnB of the plant pathologists E. W. Kitajima, C. Costa and F. P. Cupertino, and hired 3 colleagues from UC-Davis, Profs. H. Bolkan, C. S. Huang and M-T. Lin. For Ecology brought from UK Prof. David Ross Gifford, James Alexander Ratter, Peter Furley, Colin Johnson and Reimar Schaden from Germany. Head of the Dep. of Phytopathology 8 years, Coordinator of the Graduate Course of Plant Pathology for 8 years, Member of the UnB University High Council 6 years (1972-1978), Member of the Chamber of Research and Graduate Studies (8 years), Member of the Council of the Inst. of Biological Sciences for over 25 years, Member of the Advisory Council on the Environment (now CONAMA) representing the Ministry of Education (1975-1978), President of the Latin Am. Mycological Ass. (2002-2005), President of the V Latin American Mycol. Congress-2005, Administrative Director of the Braz. Phytopathological Soc. (2002-2005), Vice-President of the Braz. Mycological Soc. (2004-2007). Only Brazilian Member of the Executive Committee of the Intern. Mycological Assoc. (1994/98, 2006/10, 2010/2014); Member of the Mycology Comm. of the Phytopathological Soc. of Am. (2004/07, 2007/11, 2011/13/2017); Member of International Commission on Taxonomy of Fungi (2006/10, 2010/14); Honorary Member of the Latin Am. Mycological Assoc. (2008); First and only Brazilian to be elected Honorary Member of the Mycological Soc. of Am. (2010). Member of Editorial Council of 1. IMA Fungus, from International Mycol. Assoc. (CBS-Netherlands) 2010/16; 2. Revista Ibero Americana de Micologia; 3. Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira; 4. Fitopatologia Brasileira (1976-1996). 116 published papers, 60% in foreign journals. Papers on fungal and bacterial diseases published in Phytopathology, Plant Dis. Reporter, Eur. J. of Forest Pathology, Plant Disease, Plant Pathology (UK), Australasian Plant Pathology, Tropical Pest Management. Papers on Mycology were published in Mycol. Research (UK), Mycology (USA), Mycological Progress (Ger), Mycotaxon, Sydowia; one in the Annnals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Book chapters edited by CABI Bioscience-UK, CSIRO-Australia and Hong Kong Univ. Press. As of 1993, dedicated to the fungi of the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) and published over 150 new species, in addition to 18 new genera, most of them published abroad. Responsible for the implementation of the Mycological Collection of the Herbarium UB, with financing (US$ 350,000) by Banco do Brasil Foundation, CNPq, and FINEP-CTINFRA. The collection holds today over 23,000 specimens, well representing the microfungi of the Braz. Cerrado. Guest speaker at II, V, VI and VII Latin Am. Congresses of Mycology, IV International Mycol. Congress (IMC 4) (Vancouver, Canada, 1998), IMC8 (Australia 2006), IMC 10 (Thailand 2014); Annual Meeting. Mycol. Soc. Of Am. (2007, 2011). Seminars delivered at Universities: Calif. Davis and Riverside, Minnesota, Florida, Shizuoka, Tsukuba, Auburn; and International Mycological Institute (Egham UK), CBS (Netherlands), CSIRO-Au. President of VI Brazilian Congress of Micol.-2010. Student supervisions: 40 graduate students, 30 MS and 10 doctorates. Among his disciples ~ 40% are professors or ex-professors at several Brazilian Universities, including 6 at UnB, one at Univ. of Tarapacá-Chile and another in Ecuador; one of them second place in the Young Scientist Contest by CNPq in 1985. Reviewer of the promotion to Associate Prof. of Dr. Nasser Al-Hazmi of KING ABDULAZIZ UNIV-Saudi Arabia, 2011; and James Dempsey to Full Professor (Univ. of Georgia USA) 1983. Working for USDA as a consultant,described Ramularia crupinae from the French Alpes, presently being introduced into the field in USA to control the weed Crupina vulgaris. In 2011 presided over the evaluation evaluation of projects for CNPq/FAPEMIG Pronex in 2011. Member of the Permanent Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (2011/18). First Brazilian to receive the "Emil Mrak International Award-UC-Davis 2013"; Fourth Brazilian to be elected FELLOW of the American Phytopathogical, 2013. Guest Editor of Biodiversity and Conservation dedicated to the The Cerrado-2017.
