Career Trajectory
Bio
Since 1999 I have been part of the USP-CEU faculty. Since 2011 as a Senior Lecturer, in the area of Plant Physiology and since June 2022 as a Professor in the same area. He has made two postdoctoral stays, one at the Helmholtz Zentrum München and another at the School of Pharmacy, Nottingham University.
The central theme of my research has focused on plant-microbiome interaction in order to improve plant physiology within the framework of sustainable agriculture. We always carry out basic research in a model plant and field research with the aim of transferring technology to the productive sector.
The study of the plant-microbiome interaction ( https://www.biotecnologia-vegetal-microbioma-ceu.es) has led us to isolate a large number of bacteria capable of significantly modifying the physiology of plants, the so-called Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR). The application of the PGPRs from our collection has been the guiding line of all subsequent research. The objectives of its application have been:
1) As biofertilizers or biocontrol agents. Fundamentally worked on plants of commercial interest both in laboratory and field conditions, demonstrating the ability of some strains to be used as biofertilizers, improving the productive capacity of plants.
2) Elicit the mechanisms of induced systemic resistance (ISR) to improve the fitness of plants in situations of biotic stress.
3) Elicit the mechanisms of induced systemic tolerance (IST) to improve the fitness of plants in situations of abiotic stress.
In both cases, the genetic and metabolic biomarkers involved in the response have been studied.
4) Elicit secondary metabolism by modifying its capacity to produce and accumulate bioactive molecules of pharmaceutical or nutritional interest. We have worked mainly on the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway, in soybean and forest fruits using the RNA-seq technique. The use of PGPR improves and stabilizes the concentration of bioactives in the blackberry throughout the year, generating a healthier fruit.
