Bio
Jose M. Requena received his doctorate in 1990 from the Department of Molecular Biology of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). From 1998 to present he is Associate Professor at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. Since 2003, he is group leader at the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center (CBMSO). His research activity has been developed in the area of molecular biology and biomedicine, working mainly in aspects of genomic organization and regulation of gene expression in Leishmania, and also in diagnostic strategies and development of immunoprophylactic systems against leishmaniasis. The contributions to the study of the regulation of the heat shock response are particularly noteworthy, having revealed the importance of posttranscriptional regulation mechanisms such as RNA stabilization and translational silencing. More recently, it should be noted that his group was the first to report the transcriptome of a species of the genus Leishmania, paving the road for carrying out genome-wide, gene expression studies. Recent achievements in the field can be consulted in the Web page developed by the group: Leish-ESP (http://leish-esp.cbm.uam.es/).
Throughout his long professional career, he has contributed to the publication of 116 research articles, published in international journals included in the Journal Citation Reports, mostly as either first author and/or corresponding author. In addition, he has authored 12 book chapters, and has been the editor of a book entitled Stress Response in Microbiology (Caister Academic Press, Norfolk, UK, June, 2012). He has presented posters, communications or has been a guest lecturer in 40 national and 55 international congresses. He has collaborated as a researcher in 27 projects funded by national or international agencies, and has been a principal investigator in 16 national or international projects. He has been a reviewer evaluator for 14 national and international funding agencies. He is co-inventor of four international patents. He has been Director of 7 Doctoral Theses, and a large number of Degree Projects, Masters Final Projects, and supervisor of External Practices students. Currently, he is Associate editor for BMC Microbiology and member of the Editorial Board of several journals, and has served as reviewer for more than 50 different international journals.
