Full Professor Valenzuela Ríos has a great international prestige and is highly recognized for his excellent contributions to understand the Devonian System in a holistic way and particularly for his elegant contributions on bio-chronostratigraphy mainly based on conodonts to which he has incorporated other groups as brachiopods, ostracods, fish and plants. Consequently he has been appointed in 2020 as Vice-president of the International Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy, where he is in charge of designing the scientific policies regarding the Devonian; he was also Titular (voting) Member since 2004. Due to his merits, he was appointed (2018, international competition) by UNESCO as a Member of the International Scientific Board on Climate Change and Evolution of Life, being the first Spaniard appointed to this prestigious Board of 10 worldwide reputed scientist in the almost 50 years of this UNESCO program. As President of the IGCP-National Committee (since 2014), he is also managing the national program regarding the UNESCO International Projects on Geosciences (IGCP) and his diligence impressed the Officers, so that he has been regularly invited to address the UNESCO forum in the Paris Headquarters since 2017. Besides scientists, the diplomatic representatives of the different countries before UNESCO attend this forum. This represents an opportunity to give highly visibility to the Spanish scientific achievements in Geosciences and promote internalization in a prestigious setting.
At University of Valencia he heads the Research Group PALPALPAL, devoted to Paleontology and Paleogeography of Paleozoic invertebrates, vertebrates and plants. Visiting scholar/professor in several universities and Research centres including, UC Davis, UC Riverside, USF and CAS (San Francisco), U. Iowa, CGS (Calgary), TU Braunschweig, CZGS (Prague), SMF (Frankfurt an Main), JMU (Würzburg), IPGG SB RAS and NSTU Novosibirsk, UST Lille, NMN Leiden, U. Greifswald. His scientific interest covers the History of Earth and Life on Earth on Devonian period, special to the understanding of the ultimate causes and relations between biota evolution patterns, physic‐chemical changes on the Earth’s surface and the influence of perturbations caused by Earth’s dynamics. These studies rely on high‐resolution conodonts biostratigraphy that are being combined with geochemical and geophysical studies, microfacies analysis and cyclostratigraphy. Integration of all data will be valuable in undertaking current environmental changes and threats. 275 peer‐reviewed research papers and book chapters (48 JCR and 38 SCIMAGO indexed) were published. Among the main academic works can be mentioned the establishment of a very fine detailed conodont‐based standard of reference for globally subdividing and correlating the Lochkovian, which is the basis for multidisciplinary studies aiming at a better understanding of the Devonian World. As a consequence of this combined studies, a global climatic change (cooling within a general hot environment) around the Lochkovian/Pragian has been proposed by first time. Several prestigious award by the Humboldt Foundation, Fulbright and Salvador de Madariaga Fellowships for Senior scientists. Producing peer-reviewed papers regularly, presenting results at the highest-rank conferences, managing research projects independently and supervising Ph. D. students from different countries demonstrate the substantial scientific record. Organization of 29 Professional Conferences, Chair of the 4rd ICOS/ SDS and ISSS meetings (2017). Leader of the multidisciplinary Spanish Research of the UNESCO IGCP 596 (2011-2016).
He has also contributed to transferring science, working in projects of interest for the society as the last one, who is a public-private cooperation in the Mountains of the Benasque valley. He uses largest part of the budget from this kind of projects for capacity building of students (graduate and postdoctoral). Recognition of his contributions in this field led to gaining the six-years-transfer term; with together with the other three six-years-research terms (last one in 2016) make a total of four. He has already supervised 6 Ph.D. students and all of them find a job, either permanent (4) or connecting contracts (2) and two more Ph. D. thesis are in progress.
During the last five years, he is also specially engaged in divulgating science and participates in Conferences and round tables presentations in the “Week of Science”. He also has published some articles in outreach magazines.
He has received a total of 1603 cites (664 since 2016), h-index: 21 and i10: 42.
