My professional experience has been linked for more than 14 years to renewable energy, covering most of the value chain of the photovoltaic (PV) technology. I initially worked in the Deposited-Silicon-Devices labs of the PV Solar Energy Unit of CIEMAT. My research was focused on the development of thin-film silicon (TFS) PV devices. Important technological milestones achieved: the improvement of TFS solar cell efficiencies to values of state of the art, the fabrication of flexible PV cells, or the development of the first TFS PV modules entirely made with Spanish technology in collaboration with the UPM. All this work was funded by national and European research projects of strong industrial character which involved different companies of the Spanish PV sector. A second stage as researcher of IREC drove my research to the nanomaterial world. I specifically worked on the development of silicon nanowires (SiNWs). The integration of these nanowires as active thermoelectric material on microelectronic platforms developed by the IMB-CNM-CSIC was other of my main tasks. In 2017, I redirected my research towards the study of failures modes in commercial photovoltaic modules. In this new stage in the PV unit of CIEMAT, I specialized in PV module characterization: visual inspection, infrared thermography, and electroluminescence among others techniques. Since 2020, I work as senior researcher in TECNALIA, using my experience in PV technology on the development of algorithms for the early detection of failure modes in PV plants and the optimization of operation and maintenance (O&M) tasks in these facilities.
