Bio
Dr. José Almeida graduated in Ceramic and Glass Engineering in 1988, from University of Aveiro, Portugal. After that he joined a PhD in the same university, under the supervision of Prof. João Lopes Baptista from the Department of Ceramic and Glass Engineering. Unfortunately, in 1990 and due to family issues, his work was interrupted. In 2009 he completed an MSC in Materials Engineering at the Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering at the University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Professor Joaquim M. Vieira. In April 2011, after winning a doctoral grant from FCT (SFRH/BD/72074/2010), he began work under the supervision of Professors Isabel M.M. Salvado and Maria Helena F.V. Fernandes, with the title "Hybrid Materials for Biomedical Applications". In a multidisciplinary work based on sol-gel and the development of i/o hybrids processed at low temperatures (max 150ºC), it was possible to develop structures capable of supplying both calcium and strontium ions, fundamental for bone regeneration bone. As result he gained experience in various characterization techniques including, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, solid-state and liquid-state NMR, SAXS, SANS, PIXE, nitrogen adsorption analysis (BET), mechanical tests, and biological oriented tests. In The work developed during my PhD and after obtaining the doctoral degree, cum laude, in January 2016, resulted in the elaboration of 15 scientific papers (of which 14 in first quartile, high impact factor, journals), 6 oral communications in conferences and meetings (2 invited), and 16 poster communications. 5 of the publications were in newspapers with an impact factor between 5 and 8, with a good number of citations. After the PhD a postdoc fellowship started in the project DecorGlass a project promoted by Vista Alegre Atlantis and the University Aveiro. In 2019, was engaged in the synthesis of KNN powders as a researcher in the project “FLASH sintering of lead free functional oxides towards sustainable processing of materials for energy and related applications”, a joint project between University of Aveiro and University Nova of Lisbon. In 2020 he was contract, to the project “MULBIOIMPLANT - development of a multifunctional and bio-inspired implant to improve bone integration” for the development of multifunctional films. Various national and international collaborations were created: Prof. Fernanda Margaça, (C2TN) in Lisbon, Dr. Lszló Almasy from Budapest Neutron Centre, Prof. Attila Bóta from Hungarian Small-Angle Scattering Network, Prof. Julio Suay, Escuela Superior de Tecnología y Ciencias Experimentales, University Jaime I, Prof. Víctor Morales-Flórez, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Sevilla, Prof. Aldo Boccaccini, Institute for Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and also a collaboration with Prof. João Rocha from University of Aveiro. From 2016 until now, 8 MsC students were supervised. Currently with two MsC and one PhD student supervisions in progress. Of these master's works, 4 were/are in the field of hybrid materials (3 in biomaterials), as well as the current PhD supervision. Teaching activity in the University of Aveiro, in all the academic years from 2016-2017 to now, exception to the academic year of 2020-2021: Materials Fundamentals and Applications, Materials Characterization, Materials Laboratories, Materials Seminars. Applicant to the FCT projects as Co-Pi in FCT 2021 Call for SR&TD Projects with the project reference PTDC/CTM-CER/2381/2021, and to the FCT CEECI programs. President of the Portuguese Ceramic and Glass Society, and Chair of the R&D Network of the European Ceramic Society, has collaborated as a reviewer with the following scientific journals: Materials Letters, Materials Science and Engineering C, Cerâmica, Materials, Ceramics International, Materials Chemistry and Physics, and Journal of Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A, and Materials.
