Bio
Dr. Jose A. Tapia obtained his Degree in Veterinary Medicine on July, 1997 and one year later his Master in Veterinary Sciences, on June 1998, both at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of the University of Extremadura (Cáceres, Spain). On September 2000 he obtained his Ph.D. and started his postdoctoral research at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD. USA), which lasted from 2001 to 2005. During his postdoctoral training he was involved in several basic and clinical studies. In 2005 he returned to the University of Extremadura as assistant professor and in 2008 obtained the position of associated professor at the same University. Dr. Tapia’s research focus is primarily in the area of mammalian sperm biology focusing in the characterization of intracellular signaling pathways involved in the regulation of death/survival of sperm and in the response of these cells to cellular stress. Equine sperm cryopreservation is another area of expertise of Dr. Tapia. Since Feb 2013 he is member of the Advisory Council for Science, Technology and Innovation of Extremadura. He has published more than 80 original peer-reviewed papers and several reviews in top-ranked academic journals. He has also received several research prizes and mentions during his career.
