个人简介
1. Scientific merits. I got a BsC degree in Physics, coursed the doctorate program in Astrophysics at Univ. of La Laguna (Spain), and obtained the PhD on Coordination Chemistry and Molecular Magnetism, being currently working on devices for Sample Preparation in Analytical Chemistry. Thus, I consider myself multidisciplinary. I have coauthored 135 scientific publications in different areas of chemistry, from molecular magnetism, to analytical chemistry, crystal engineering or even organic chemistry, with an h index of 43. The transversal enabling capability for some of the work is crystallography, a skill I am proficient (I have taught it in the UIMP Master in Crystallography and Crystallization, in the Spanish School on Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction, and specific courses in the University of Concepción, Chile). My main research field during my PhD and up to 2013 was molecular magnetism, with contributions about the construction of ferromagnetic copper(II) based compounds (Polyhedron 2003,22,2143; 120 citations), the use of crystal engineering to modify the magnetic properties of coordination compounds (CrystEngComm 2007,9,478; 97 citations). At this time, I was chief staff in the magnetic measurements service of the SEGAI in the University of La Laguna. However, from 2014, my research took a new direction to the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in sample preparation for analytical methodologies and that was a fortunate change that led us to pioneer this area (Talanta 2015,139,13; 156 citations) and form the MAT4LL group together with Prof. Verónica Pino. Not only the use of MOFs, but the understanding of the sorbent adsorption and desorption mechanism utilizing different MOFs (Talanta 2018,179,775; 39 citations) or their implementation on a microextraction device (Analytica Chimica Acta 2020,1133,137; 17 citations). I have participated in the design and writing of research projects since the MAT2004-03312 to the most recent, the PDC2021-120816-I00 proof-of-concept in 2020, bringing more than 1M€ to the University of La Laguna. I was principal investigator of a small subproject in the 2010 call of the Spanish R&D Plan and I was also PI of a Long-Term Project at the ESRF (2009-2012). I have been main proposer in proposals to large facilities like the ESRF, DIAMOND, SOLEIL, ALBA and the ILL, in experiments related to crystallography. During most of my career I have had a strong collaboration with the ICMol of the University of Valencia with Prof. F. Lloret and M. Julve. But I also have ties with the ILL (Grenoble, France), University of Concepción (Chile), and TU Dresden (Germany). I am part of the Spanish National Networks ‘La Factoria’ and ‘InSamPr’, and the European Network EuChemS-DAC Sample Preparation. I am an associate of the RSEQ and RSEF since 2001, and I was in the board of the Crystallography and Crystal Growth group (GE3C) from 2010 to 2019, I am also individual member of the European Crystallographic Association.
2. Technology Transfer and dissemination. I obtained a technology contract in 2017 funded by Cabildo de Tenerife, in collaboration with the University of La Laguna and Tagua SL, to lead a mixed industrial/research project on miniaturized devices for environmental analysis. This project led to file a patent concerning a stationary phase based on metal-organic frameworks for solid-phase micro-extraction, which went on PCT extension in mid-2020 and was licensed to exploitation in late-2021 to Teknokroma Analitica SL, a lab-equipment company based in Barcelona, and now it is protected in Europe and USA. A second patent was filed in late-2021 about a new simple device for sample preparation. I am researcher in a Proof-of-Concept project. I have participated in dissemination activities such as the Macaronight, and Local Science Fairs. I was in charge of the crystal growth competition in Tenerife during the International Year of Crystallography in 2014, I was the president of the organization committee of the Meeting of the Italian and Spanish Crystallographic Associations, held in Tenerife by mid 2016, and now I am participating in the organizing committee of Extech2023.
3. Mentoring, reviewing. I have supervised 5 Doctoral Thesis and I am currently supervising two more. Oscar Fabelo and Laura Cañadillas (former PhD students of mine) are now working at the ILL in Grenoble (France), M. Déniz is the technician at the Diffraction Service in the SEGAI of the University of La Laguna, N. Parra is working in the University of Santiago (Chile) and P. Díaz-Gallifa left Academia and he is working in Alaya-Care. I have also supervised a number of Master Thesis and undergraduate projects in the University of La Laguna. I am reviewing projects for the Swiss National Foundation and the Poland National Science Centre, and articles in peer review journals like J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nature Commun., Chem. Commun., CrystEngComm, Microchemical J., New J. Chem., etc. I am academic editor of Nanomaterials.
