The introduction and spread of plant pests, such as bacteria, fungi and insects, among plant crops is a severe threat that can have far-reaching environmental, social and economic consequences. For instance, FAO estimates that up to 40 per cent of global crop production is lost to pests annually. In addition, the reduction of pesticide use in Europe increases the need to find environmentally friendly alternatives to protect plants. For these reasons, I have focussed my research career on understanding the plant's immune system to boost defensive responses and, thereby, stimulate plant health.
I completed my PhD at the University Jaume I of Castellón, with CumLaude honourable mention where I developed new chromatographic tools to discover novel metabolites mediating priming responses in plants. I was a pioneer in demonstrating that one of these metabolites mediates callose accumulation after pathogen attack, which is crucial to stop pathogen disease. The impact's research is demonstrated by the fact that an agrochemical company uses some of these metabolites as immunological activators in a range of products. During my first postdoctoral stay at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland, 2015-2016), I discovered the biochemical function of the sought-after antimicrobial protein PR-1. Then, I moved with the Spanish postdoctoral fellowship, Juan de la Cierva-Formación, to EEZ-CSIC (Granada, 2017-2018). During this period, I found that Mycorrhiza-Induced Resistance is based on the early recognition of damaged-self molecules derived from the plant cell wall.
Currently, I hold an excellence grant from the Valencian regional research program (CDEIGENT/2018), where I am dissecting the role of Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns in plant immunity. Overall, I have supervised undergraduate, MSc and PhD students, been awarded four postdoctoral fellowships, participated in National and International projects and built an international research network.
