Career Trajectory
Bio
Jonathan Lafond has a background in biology and ecology, with a Bachelor’s degree completed at Université de Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke, QC, Canada) in 2003. He entered the Master’s Program in Soils and Environment at Université Laval (Québec, QC, Canada) in 2006, before fast-tracking to the Ph.D. Program and specializing in soil physics. The title of his doctoral dissertation, successfully defended in December 2010, was “Multiscale variability of soil gas diffusion”. During his Ph.D. thesis project, Jonathan Lafond acquired a unique experience in the collection and quantitative analysis of computed tomography (CT) scanning data to describe soil porosity in intact soil cores. More specifically, the scrutiny of soil CT images brought him to develop an expertise in sophisticated statistical analyses (singularity and Rényi multi-fractal spectra) of this type of CT scanning data. In another part of his Ph.D. thesis project, Jonathan Lafond applied a recently developed multivariate geostatistical method (coregionalization analysis with a drift), to study spatial distribution patterns of soil gas diffusion and their stability in time at small vs. large scale in agricultural fields. In 2011, Dr. Lafond completed a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at Université Laval on precision irrigation of cultivated peatlands in southwestern Québec. From 2012 to 2020, he was Research Associate at Université Laval, and studies the soil mechanisms involved in water transmission and their spatial heterogeneity to optimize irrigation performance and water management. His leadership and expertise brought him to work on large funded research projects on water and soil conservation in partnership with vegetables and cranberry growers. Since 2020, Dr. Lafond is Research Scientist in soil and agricultural landscape hydrology at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Through his research program, he studies the hydrodynamics of soils at various spatial scales, in order to qualify and quantify the transport of fertilizers and contaminants in surface water and groundwater. He develops and contributes to the adoption of best water-use management practices. To date, Dr. Jonathan Lafond is the author or co-author of 27 articles published in refereed journals, including Frontiers in Plant Science, Frontiers in Soil Science, European Journal of Soil Science, Soil Science Society of America Journal, Geoderma, and Journal of Environmental Monitoring.
