Bio
Margarita Salas postdoctoral researcher at the CRETUS in the Department of Functional Biology within the ECOTOX research group, University of Santiago de Compostela. My investigation focuses on the study of biological invasions and plant ecology. Particularly, I am interested in examining the invasion mechanisms of invasive plants and elucidating the impacts produced by plant invasions on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. My research covers different aspects of terrestrial ecology unfolding an interdisciplinary approach, including botany, ecology, entomology, plant physiology, soil science, and statistics. My main objective is to better understand how abiotic and biotic factors affect the invasion process of non-native plants and how this conditions biological interactions (plant-animal, plant-plant and plant-soil). My doctoral dissertation focused on the role of allelopathy in the germination and establishment of native species and invasive acacias, the study of plant-herbivore ecological networks mediated by invasive plants, especially Carpobrotus edulis, and the ecophysiological response of this invader to the attack of herbivores. Currently, I am involved as a postdoc in a global project related to the role of hybridization in plant invasiveness using the genus Carpobrotus (Aizoaceae) as a model.
Since 2016, my scientific production can be summarized in 15 articles (9 as corresponding author), 13 peer-reviewed articles in JCR journals and 2 articles in other journals, and more than 30 communications to national or international conferences (oral, poster and proceedings). I participated in 12 workshops, 3 competitive national or international projects and other 2 regional projects, and completed several courses focused mainly on biological invasions, environmental conservation, and ecosystem services. My pre- and post-doctoral stages in South Africa, Portugal and Czech Republic (stays abroad for more than 32 months) allowed me to work in top research centres such as Centre for Invasion Biology (Stellenbosch University, South Africa), Centre for Functional Ecology (Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal) and Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czechia) that led to a good scientific collaboration with co-authors from 7 different countries.
Associate Editor of the journal Management of Biological Invasions and member of the Editorial Board of Flora. Co-Editing the book “Biological Invasions and Global Insect decline” (Academic Press, Elsevier). Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Young Researchers Conference on Invasive Species (IYRCIS) held in Vigo in May 2021 and 2022.
