Dean Koprowski has taught undergraduate courses in wildlife conservation and management, and graduate courses that deal with the complexity of environmental and conservation challenges in human-dominated landscapes. He has taught international courses in Ecuador, Mongolia, China and Italy. He brings a passion for interdisciplinary teaching that is rich in experiential learning in order to immerse students in the grand challenges that our society faces. John strives to empower and embolden students to make a difference.
John’s research program has focused on the ecology, conservation and management of biodiversity through community-based approaches in the United States, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Nepal, China, Mongolia, South Africa and numerous other international locations. With more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 5 books including the recent text International Wildlife Management, John and his more than 50 graduate students have worked to provide data-informed solutions to conservation challenges. His efforts in wildlife conservation have led to his election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Wildlife Society, the Linnean Society of London and the Explorers Club. In 2022, he was recognized with the Aldo Leopold Memorial Award by The Wildlife Society, the 11,000 member professional society’s highest prize for lifetime contributions to wildlife conservation. John also holds an honorary faculty appointment with the University of Insubria in northern Italy and is an emeritus professor at the University of Arizona.
Dean Koprowski brings a passion for addressing important challenges, an appreciation for interdisciplinary approaches to environmental issues, considerable leadership and administrative experience, and vision to expand the reach of the Haub School. He believes in the efforts of The Haub School to advance the understanding and resolution of complex environmental and natural resource challenges in the West and around the world through its educational, research, outreach and collaborative problem-solving programs.
