Career Trajectory
Bio
John Cook (PhD) last post was as a Senior Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt (2019-2022). John has been part of research and development grant proposals that have attracted over £5 million in competitive external funding. In addition, he has published/presented around 300 refereed articles and invited talks in the area of Technology Enhanced Learning. John’s current research and practice focus is hybrid learning spaces (called the Zone of Possibility). A Zone of Possibility (ZoP) is a place where individuals can overcome the constraints of expectations and power structures to make things happen. Helping learners participate with each other in groups (a Zone) calls for orchestrating social supports (via navigation and bridging aids) so that learners can benefit from the ideas of others (Possibility). ZoP is a hybrid physical and digital zone that engages with a wide range of challenges. The aim is to answer the following educational design-based research question: In the context of hybrid learning spaces, how can the design process and design thinking advance or bridge ‘successful communication’ and an understanding of social context in a ZoP? The work, including a case study using Goethe students, is described in Cook et al. (2020).
Until recently, John was Professor of Learning Innovation at UWE Bristol in the Department of Education (2012-2017). Before this he was Professor of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Director of the Learning Technology Research Institute, London Metropolitan University (2007-2012). In addition, John has over 14 years previous experience as a full time lecturer at various Higher Education Institutions. He has led three PhD and one Professional Doctorate supervision teams to completion and has acted as external examiner for 15 PhD s from around the world. He has over 16 years project management experience. EC FP7 examples include MATURE IP and Learning Layers IP (the latter won an EC VET Researcher Project Award 2018). John has a specific interest in several related areas: hybrid learning spaces (called the ZoP), informal and lifelong learning in all setting (from higher education to museums to the work place), virtual and augmented reality, hybridity and hybrid cities, mobile learning in all sectors, and work based learning. The overarching thread of John’s research is his investigation, in various projects and publications since 2004, is the contested area of informal learning and lifelong learning: be it a policy level (Pachler and Cook, 2008), at a ‘bridging the gap’ orientation (Cook et al., 2008), at an equity of access of cultural resources level (e.g. Cook, Pachler and Bachmair, 2012) or from the viewpoint of citizen interactions in cities and museums (Cook, 2016a: Sage Handbook of E-Learning Research; Cook, 2016b invited talk), or in the context of structures, agency and cultural practices (various publications with Pachler and Bachmair).
John is a founding member of The London Mobile Learning Group: www.londonmobilelearning.net/ along with Professors Pachler and Bachmair. He was
Chair/President of the Association for Learning Technology (2004-06) and Chair of ALT’s Research Committee (2008-2012). John has sat on various journal editorial boards and conducted Assessor and review work for the EU, UK Research Councils (e.g. ESRC, EPSRC), the US NSF and UK Charitable Trusts (e.g. The Leverhulme & Welcome Trusts). John served on the Advisory Board for the influential NMC Horizon Report for Higher Education Edition: http://bit.ly/vLD2fr
