Bio
Joel Borges received his BSc degree (a 5-year course) from the University of Minho, in 2003, and he was a Physics/Chemistry Teacher from 2002 to 2012, contracted by the Ministry of Education. By the end of 2008, he obtained a master’s degree in Astronomy from the University of Porto. He concluded his PhD in Sciences (Physics) at the University of Minho, in 2013. Afterwards, he started his research career as postdoc, with consecutive fellowships from IPN/Coimbra, CTU/Prague and Centre of Physics (CF-UM-UP). In April 2019, he started a junior researcher contract with the University of Minho, affiliated to CF-UM-UP. From 2021 he is Assistant Researcher at CF-UM-UP, University of Minho. His main research topics are related to the development of thin films (deposited by sputtering) for different applications, namely: nanoplasmonic materials composed by noble metal nanoparticles (Au, Ag) dispersed in a dielectric/semiconductor matrix (TiO2, CuO, Al2O3, ZnO, etc.), for gas- and bio-sensing. He was co-responsible for the installation and development of a research laboratory at CF-UM-UP (Azurem), which includes two vacuum sputtering chambers, a plasma cleaner, two optical systems for plasmonic sensing tests, among other small equipment. He is co-author of ~65 peer reviewed papers, most of them as first author and/or corresponding author. He participated in different projects (1 FP7, 6 National, 1 bilateral), co-supervised 4 PhD, 7 MSc, and 8 BSc students, and has several communications in national/international meetings. His is Guest Editor of Materials (MDPI), Frontiers in Nanotechnology, and Sensors (MDPI), as well as representative of IUVSTA Thin Film Division in Portugal.
