Bio
Joaquim de Moura is a highly accomplished computer scientist and researcher with a wealth of experience and a strong track record of academic and professional achievements. He received his M.Sc. in Computer Science in 2016, where he was awarded first place for the best Master's Degree project by the Professional College of Computer Engineering in Galicia. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in 2019, graduating cum laude and receiving the International Doctor Mention and the Extraordinary PhD Award (1st place in the area of Computer Science and Mathematics) at the University of A Coruña. In 2020, he was recognized by the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences for his contributions to the fight against COVID-19. Throughout his career, de Moura has published over 115 peer-reviewed papers in a variety of highly regarded journals and conferences.
Currently, de Moura is an Assistant Lecturer at the University of A Coruña and a member of the renowned Varpa group (Competitive Reference Group) affiliated with the Centre for Information and Communications Technology Research - CITIC (Singular Research Center) and the Biomedical Research Institute of A Coruña - INIBIC (Health Research Institute accredited by ISCIII) . The Varpa group was awarded the best research group in Galicia in 2020 (1st edition) and the recognition from the Galician Health Cluster in the VII Fórum RIES 2022. De Moura has received several competitive fellowships, including two postdoctoral fellowships from the Xunta de Galicia (grant ref. ED481B 2021/059) and CITIC (grant ref. 2020/CP/015), as well as a predoctoral fellowship from the CITIC (grant ref. 2017/CP/054). In addition to his work at the University of A Coruña, de Moura has also gained international experience through his research positions as a visiting researcher at the Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER) affiliated with the INESC-TEC (National Institute of Systems Engineering and Computing) at the University of Porto and as a postdoctoral visiting researcher at the Quantitative Healthcare Analysis (QurAI) group at the University of Amsterdam, both renowned research centers in the field of medical image analysis.
De Moura has participated in 22 regional, national, and international projects, and has also participated in 16 I+D+i competitive contracts with public or private entities involving technology transfer, as well as 12 software registrations. He is an active member of the research community, serving as a member of the review committee for several well-established journals and participating in the technical and organizational committees of many reputed conferences. He is also an expert evaluator of research projects from different international calls. His main research interests are in the fields of computer vision, image processing, machine learning, pattern recognition, and biomedical image analysis.
