I have a graduation in Chemistry by Faculty of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisbon (FCT/UNL, 1997) and a PhD in Biology–Microbiology by the same university (2003), part of it developed at Technical University of Munich and Max Planck Institute in Bremen, Germany. Previous research interests regarded the ecology, molecular detection, typing and taxonomy of microorganisms, particularly yeasts and other fungi. During the last years, my research was mainly related to the development of novel diagnostic tools for infectious diseases, particularly zoonotic diseases, and to the molecular characterization of the respective agents. Currently, I hold a full-time, permanent position as senior lecturer in microbiology at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences of University of Brighton (UK), where I am starting my novel research line in medical mycology. I am also an invited lecturer at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of NOVA University (Lisbon, Portugal).
