Career Trajectory
Bio
Since my master’s degree, I have been studying and working in the conservation of photographic materials. I start my professional career by working for Luís Pavão Limitada (LUPA), a reference company on the conservation and restoration of photographs, where I worked between 2009 and 2013. This experience allowed me to recognize several gaps in the knowledge about these materials and their preservation, making me wish to progress in my research career. Between 2014 and 2019, I was a PhD fellow in the Doctoral Programme in the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, from FCT NOVA. The resulting thesis is entitled: ‘Ângelo de Sousa’s photographic and film collection: strategies for the preservation of colour slide-based artworks’. The investigation conducted during my dissertation has been of the utmost importance for the development of my scientific background and for a deeper knowledge about photographic materials. During that time, I was part of different projects related to the preservation of modern and contemporary materials, especially photographs. I also participated in several courses from the conservation and restoration's bachelor and master at FCT NOVA and co-supervised a master thesis. In 2020, I was a research fellow in the international project ‘NEMOSINE - Innovative packaging solutions for storage and conservation of 20th century cultural heritage of artefacts based on cellulose derivatives’. Besides my academic degrees, I have always enrolled in several national and international conferences and workshops to improve my knowledge. Up to now, I have produced 7 publications, 5 of which as first author and corresponding author. Although scientific journals of conservation of cultural heritage do not have a high impact factor, I have always preferred to publish in journals from my field since they have a higher reach among the conservation and restoration community. Since 2019, I am a visiting professor at Escola das Artes UCP, teaching conservation of photographic materials within the Master of Conservation and Restoration. In 2019/2020, I led a project dedicated to the conservation of a photographic collection from Museu Benfica Cosme – Damião, during which I developed an innovative methodology for the flattening of negatives with deformation. I am also a founding partner of NEON Art Conservation, a spin-off from NOVA, which is dedicated to the preservation of modern and contemporary cultural heritage, where I currently work as a manager and photograph conservator.
