Career Trajectory
Bio
Joana Magalhaes concluded her PhD in Biomedical Sciences by the University of Porto (UP) in 2011. During her PhD, under MJ Saraiva, Joana studied the molecular pathways of neurodegeneration and worked on pharmacological therapies for a neuropathy (FAP). Following her PhD, J Magalhaes moved to the Schapira lab at University College London – UK, a world reference group in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), where, as a Research Associate, she studied the molecular impact of glucocerebrosidase (Gba) mutations on PD (with emphasis on the lysosome-autophagy pathway) and potential pharmacological therapies for PD. In 2017, J Magalhaes was awarded a 3-year Post-Doctoral fellowship (281.904,00€) from Lundbeck foundation to move to the Issazadeh lab at BRIC – U Copenhagen-DK), where she continued working on PD, studying the importance of neuron-glia interactions in and how defective neuronal interferon signalling causes PD-associated cognitive and motor decline. This work resulted in a high impact first author manuscript (Molecular Psychiatry, provisionally accepted). Having spent 6 years abroad, Joana returned to Portugal, and is currently working as a research scientist at i3S – Nerve Regeneration group, where she is studying actin cytoskeleton alterations in neurodegeneration.
J Magalhaes has participated in several international conferences and joined science dissemination programs. Moreover, she has supervised students (PhD, MSc and BSc) and she is a mentor in the “Global Talent Mentoring” program. J Magalhaes is a reviewer for Frontiers in Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology, and has given lectures and seminars at UCL, U Copenhagen, U Porto and U Aveiro.
J Magalhaes current scientific interests include PD, neurodegeneration, brain ageing and age-related neural dysfunction.
