Research interest: Marine Biogeochemistry
• Nutrients cycling, eutrophication and oxygen depletion in Baltic Sea water masses
• Mercury species in seawater
Transformation of ionic mercury and sea-air exchange of gaseous elemental mercury
Concentration distribution and controlling processes of methylmercury, dimethylmercury, elemental mercury,
and total mercury in suboxic, anoxic as well as sulfidic waters of the Baltic Sea.
• Air-sea gas exchange of gases and gaseous compounds (volatile halogenated hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and gaseous mercury compounds)
• Particle associated trace elements in sinking and suspended particles (Northeast Atlantic, North Atlantic)
• The carbonate system of the Baltic Sea with a special emphasis on the CO2 air-sea gas exchange
Biography
1987 First degree in Chemistry at Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen, Germany
1990 Diploma in Chemistry at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (CAU Kiel), Germany
1994 PhD at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science of CAU Kiel
Thesis: “Volatile halogenated hydrocarbons: exchange processes between seawater and the atmosphere” at the Institute of Marine Science in Kiel (IfM-Kiel)
1994-1999 Postdoctoral researcher at IfM- Kiel in the frame of German-JGOFS
1999-2003 Postdoctoral researcher at Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) in the frame of projects of the German Science Foundation (DFG)
2004-2005 Scientist at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg
Since 2005 Scientist at IOW
