Bio
João Pedro Oliveira was born on the 14th of January 1989 in Sintra, Portugal. He got his PhD in Materials Science and Enginering in 2016 from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. During his Phd, Joao worked on welding of shape memory alloys and was an invited researcher at the the Center for Advanced Materials Joining of The University of Waterloo, Canada. He then took a postdoctoral position at the Welding Engineering Program, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, at the The Ohio State University, USA working in the areas of welding and additive manufacturing of advanced engineering alloys. In 2018 he took an assistant professor position at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. In 2022 he moved to the Materials Science Department also at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. At the Materials Science Department he is the coordinator of the bachelor degree in Materials Engineering.
His primary research interests focus on fusion-based welding and additive manufacturing. João has a special interest in non-conventional metallic materials such as high entropy alloys and shape memory alloys. Most of João's group research leverages on the use of electron microscopy and high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction to understand the microstructure evolution upon the application of different processing routes. Joao and his group have been developing automated routines for processing the large amount of data generated during synchrotron X-ray diffraction. More recently, João's group has been developed thermodynamic simulation routines for probing vast compositional spaces supported by experimental validation. João is/was the PI or co-PI in several national and international applied and fundamental projects and has raised more than 1.5 M Euros in funding. The impact of Joao and his group's work in the areas of additive manufacturing and welding is evidenced by the more than 120 peer-review papers in key outlets that include Progress in Materials Science, Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia and Additive Manufacturing. He has a Scopus h-index of 42 (https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=55601590000) and holds one patent on novel additive manufacturing process based on wire and arc additive manufacturing. Joao currently supervises 10 PhD students in the areas of welding and additive manufacturing. Finally, João is currently Associate Editor of Additive Manufacturing and is part of the editorial board of Materials & Design (both Elsevier journals).
