Bio
João Pedro Gouveia is an environmental engineer with a Ph.D. in Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies focused on Sustainable Energy Systems from NOVA School of Science and Technology of NOVA University of Lisbon (PT). He is the head of the FireFly Lab - a team working on energy poverty and buildings' energy efficiency; and a Senior Researcher and Integrated Member at the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE). He is the coordinator of the CHANGE - Global Change and Sustainability Institute Thematic Line on "Promoting a circular and carbon neutral economy". He is an invited professor at FCT-NOVA University of Lisbon on climate change mitigation and adaptation and sustainable urban planning and at ISEC Lisboa - Higher Institute of Education and Sciences. He is one of the founders of Regenerative Intelligence (RegenIntel), a global advisory consultancy US based.
João Pedro has also been an invited lecturer in numerous universities (Lisbon University, NOVA University of Lisbon, Coimbra, Évora, Aveiro, Bergen, UN Mexico, Stuttgart Universities) for MSc and Ph.D. classes on a wide range of topics: Energy &Environment; Physical Geography & Land Use Planning; Bioenergy; Geological, Civil & Environmental Engineering; Climate Change & Sustainable Development Policies; System Dynamics; and Urban Planning. He was a Senior Research Fellow for energy systems at Project Drawdown (USA) (2016-2020), where he had a coordination role.
João works in sustainable energy transitions, low carbon energy systems, and related economic & policy analysis; smart cities; climate mitigation & adaptation strategies; buildings energy efficiency; energy poverty & thermal comfort; and smart meter data mining. He has worked on over 10 European Union-funded research/consultancy projects where he had a coordination role on four, 1 USA based where he coordinated a research area, and 14 nationally funded by Portuguese public and private authorities (where he has/had a coordination role on 10). He is part of the Advisory board of 7 EU projects. João has also worked on several policy support studies for the Portuguese Ministry of Environment and Economy on climate change, low carbon pathways, and renewable energy technology assessment, resulting in important policy documents. He has contributed to the writing of more than 40 reports (public and private).
João has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact factor journals (h-index=22 with over 2400 citations on Google Scholar). He has contributed to presentations at over 100 national & international conferences and events, from which he has been an invited speaker/keynote to more than 50. He has 7 book chapters & 1 book (one a NY Times Best Seller translated into over 10 languages). He organized over 30 events like workshops & seminars. He currently supervises 4 Ph.D. theses and has supervised #25 MSc dissertations (#8 ongoing). He hosted and/or managed the work of over #20 international researchers. He took part in around #20 academic juries. He has received 3 awards/prizes.
Between 2017-2019 he was on the Management Committee of EU COST Action on Energy Poverty (ENGAGER). Since 2021 he has been on the Coordination team of the EU Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH). He was one of the founders and Board Member of DERA: Drawdown Europe Research Association (2019-2022) and APEEN - Portuguese Association for Energy Economics (2015). Since 2020, he has been an elected representative of the Researchers on the Environmental Science and Engineering Department Council at FCT-NOVA.
Since 2017 he has been a regular presence in national and international media outlets through interviews & TV news reports, online platforms, and newspapers. He has strong skills in team management, quantitative analysis, effective communication of results, and stakeholder engagement processes, including national, regional, and local authorities.
Before his Ph.D., he completed his master's degree in Environmental Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at NOVA University of Lisbon, where he also completed his bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering.
