Bio
João Manoel Gomes da Silva Jr. received the Dipl. Eng. degree in electrical engineering from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1992, the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Brazil, in 1994, and the Ph.D. (“Doctorat en Automatique”) degree from Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France, in 1997.
In 1997, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, UFRGS, where he is currently an Associate Professor. Since 2000, he has been a Researcher with the Brazilian National Council for Research (CNPq). In 2011, during a sabbatical leave of one year, he was an Honorary Visiting Fellow in the Control Research Group, Department of Engineering, University of Leicester, Leicester, U.K. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal Européen des Systèmes Automatisés (France). His research topics include constrained control, time-delay systems, robust control, and nonlinear systems.
Dr. Gomes da Silva Jr. is a member of the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society and of the International Federation of Automatic Control Technical Commitee on Linear Control Systems. From 2008 to 2010, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Brazilian Automation Society (SBA).
