Bio
Belo is a physicist dedicated to the study of magnetic materials and their phase transitions. He is particularly motivated by the scientific questions and the technological opportunities that emerge from macro to nanoscale design of magnetocaloric materials. Belo was awarded a FCT-funded PhD in Physics by UPorto in 2017, in a collaboration between INA (Zaragoza) and IFIMUP (Porto). He has orally presented in major international conferences: INTERMAG, MMM, JEMS, ICTF and IBCM, where he won the IUVSTA-Elsevier Student and the Best Oral presentation awards. During this time, Belo was a visiting researcher at: INA, Ames Lab (USA), Imperial College (London), ICMM (Madrid), ISOLDE-CERN (Geneve) and at large-scale facilities, via successful beam/experiment-time applications: ESRF (Grenoble), MAX Lab (Lund), HFML (Nijmegen), APS (Argonne), CNMS and ORNL (Oak Ridge). Belo then became a Post-Doctoral researcher at UAveiro for 2 years, where he produced magnetocaloric materials with improved performance and co-developed a magnetic heat pump prototype within the Smart Green Homes project (UAveiro and Bosch). In 2019, Belo joined IFIMUP as a Junior Researcher to be dedicated: i) understand and optimize magnetovolume coupling and transition kinetics of magnetocaloric materials; ii) optimize hyperthermia performance of magneto-plasmonic heterostructures; iii) explore size-confinement effects on negative thermal expansion materials. Recently, he is thrilled by the fundamental underlying physics of light-matter interactions and the ability to explore such interactions to produce nanostructures. His expertise in Physics of Condensed matter is demonstrated by the 33 peer-reviewed publications (11 as 1st author and 29/4 in regular/conference journals) in prestigious journals such as PRB, APL, Mater. Des and NanoEnergy, 1 patent filled and 1 book chapter (1st author). Currently, Belo publications have 362/310 citations, averaging 11/9.4 citations per publication resulting in a 12/11 h-factor, according to Scholar/Scopus, respectively. Belo is working towards his scientific independence: i) Funded Fulbright Visiting Scholar grant and as PI of two international collaborative projects funded by EEA and BRF-Parsuk international funding agencies. In addition is has initiated new collaborations at TUDarmstadt, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (Germany) Inst. Ener. Tech. (Norway), Durham Univ. Comm. (UK) and Champalimaud foundation (PT) and has strengthen existing collaborations: Ames Lab, INA, Laboratory of Novel Magnetic Materials, UAveiro, UMinho. Simultaneously, Belo has been active in University teaching (5 semesters) and supervision: as an Invited Assistant Professor at UAveiro (2018) and at FCUP (2019-now) teaching Electricity and Magnetism and Physics Labs (I and III); and as the main supervisor of 1 PhD, 5 MSc theses and 10 BSc scientific initiation projects and co-supervisor of 1 PhD, 1 MSc and 3 BSc. In addition, he has been the co-PI of the FCT funded pedagogical project "Verão com Ciência 2021" and main supervisor of two BSc´s grantees. He is currently attending an Innovative Pedagogical Program for Young University Professors. His expertise in the field has been recognized through the invitation to be: chairman of Magnetic materials for energy applications, including magnetocalorics symposium at JEMS 2022, chairman of 2 symposia sessions at JEMS 2020, to be the Guest Editor for a JMMM special issue, to integrate the Editorial Review Board of IEEE Magnetics Letters and to act as reviewer (63) in journals, such as Progress Materials Science, ACS Chem. Mater. and Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. In parallel, he has also been actively involved in scientific dissemination activities (Escola de Verão de Física (FCUP, 5x); Academia de Verão (UA, 1), contributing for international/national science news: Physics World, IOP, Nanowerk (2) and in national TV/radio shows (Porto Canal, Antena 1).
