Career Trajectory
Bio
My long term research interests involve understanding neural mechanisms of flavor, which plays an important role in guiding ingestive behavior that affects nutrition and can lead to health problems. My academic training and research experience have equipped me with a broad background in cross-disciplinary techniques used in modern neuroscience. As a pre-doctoral student with Dr. Jianqun Yan, my research focused on the modulatory role of central nucleus of the amygdala in taste sensory coding and feeding behavior. During this training I gained expertise in multiple methods including molecular, behavioral, and neurophysiological recording to study neural substrates underlying taste processing at the forebrain level. From this work I was able to publish three first-author peer-reviewed papers while a graduate student. I also received several academic awards during my graduate training. For my post-doctoral work I am now training with Dr. Lemon, whose lab focuses on investigating interactions between taste and oral somatosensory (e.g., temperature, touch or pain) processing in the mammalian brain stem. Over the past three years, I have learned to perform sophisticated in vivo electrophysiological recording experiments in anesthetized mice that are measuring electrical impulses in single neurons evoked by oral application of cross-modal taste-thermal stimuli. I also developed a protocol for recording taste-sensitive neurons in the brain while stimulating the third branch of trigeminal ganglion and discovered that large percentage of the taste-sensitive neurons in the brain stem receive functional input from trigeminal system. I was awarded a Polak post-doctoral travel award from the Association for Chemoreception Sciences which usually have only 5 to 6 awardees for each year to present these data at the 2015 meeting of the society in Bonita Springs, Florida. I have also received training in and am now using optogenetic methods in neurophysiological studies of taste and trigeminal interaction in the brain. While in Dr. Lemon’s lab I have received additional training in data analysis, computer programming and in gustatory behavioral assays.
