个人简介
Jilda is a marine biologist specialized in the study of Antarctic fish and Southern Ocean ecosystems. Ever since she transitioned from biomedical research in neurobiology during her undergraduate and first graduate studies, Jilda’s goal has been and continues to be to apply her research to conservation.
After diving into graduate work in marine biology in London (UK), where she studied the population genetics of North Sea soft corals to understand the impact of shrimp trawling on benthic ecosystems, she moved to Italy to pursue her PhD. There, she moved from the cold waters of the North Sea to the frigid depths of the Southern Ocean, developing further her population genetics approaches while introducing otolith trace element and trophic analysis approaches to understanding the population dynamics of a keystone species, the Antarctic silverfish.
After she was awarded her first postdoctoral fellowship from the Humboldt foundation, she travelled to Germany, where she moved from genetics to genomics: applying reduced representation and whole-genome resequencing approaches to a commercially exploited Southern Ocean species, the Antarctic toothfish. Working closely with fisheries management organizations, she continued to forge interdisciplinary partnerships – working between multiple institutions to combine genomics and otolith trace element analysis approaches to testing population connectivity hypotheses in toothfish.
Currently, Jilda is engaged in her second independently funded postdoctoral research project, now based in France. She won funding from the Institute Pierre-Simon Laplace to develop collaborations between climate research laboratories within the institute. In her new role, Jilda manages a team of collaborators to combine genomics and ecological approaches to predict the impacts of climate change on species using species distribution and hydrographic modelling approaches.
