Bio
Dr. Jiayang Wu received the B.Eng. degree in communication engineering from Xidian University, Xi'an, China, in 2010 and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in December of 2015. After that, he joined Swinburne University of Technology and became a full-time Research Fellow in 2016. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow / Senior Lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology.
After over 10 years' accumulation, Dr. Wu has gained considerable experience and developed extensive expertise about the design, fabrication, characterization, and system demonstration of integrated photonic devices for high-speed optical information processing. His current research fields include integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, 2D materials, optical communications, and RF photonics. As of November 1st of 2022, he has more than 200 refereed publications in SCI journals and EI conference proceedings, highlighted by Nature, Nature Reviews Chemistry, Advanced Materials, Advances in Optics and Photonics, Nature Communications, Applied Physcis Reviews, Small Methods, Small, Laser & Photonics Reviews, and Nano Letters. He is also an inventor for 15 filed patents about integrated photonic devices and optical communication technologies.
Dr. Wu’s research provides powerful solutions to the implementation of functional components and critical technologies to improve the performance of the state-of-the-art photonic processors, optical communication systems, and optical interconnects − the hardware base for ultra-high-speed data transmission and information processing. He focuses on integrated photonic processing technologies that can provide compact device footprint, low power consumption, and the capability for large-scale manufacturing, thus ensuring the research outputs can be of benefit to the end users. His research is dedicated to building a strategic bridge between fundamental science and industry to transform integrated photonics into a practical and reliable technology easily utilised by the broader community.
Dr. Wu is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is also a member of the Optica and the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP). In 2021, Dr. Wu was awarded the Australian National Research Award as the top researcher in the field of Optics & Photonics (only 1 person).
Dr. Wu is / has supervised 10 PhD students. His PhD students have gone on to win a number of awards, including the IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowships in 2019, 2021, and 2022 (10 recipients globally each year), the Wanda Henry Prize in 2020 (1 recipient in Australia & New Zealand each year), the Swinburne FSET HDR Woman Researcher of the Year in 2021 and 2022 (2 recipients in Swinburne each year), and the Swinburne’s Iain Wallace award (for top PhD thesis) in 2020, 2021, and 2022.
