Bio
Jia Yen is a Senior Principal Occupational Therapist at National University Hospital (Singapore). She has obtained her Master in Health Science (Occupational Therapy) Honours in University of Sydney. She received her basic training in Occupational Therapy at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore. Currently Jia Yen is also pursuing her PhD studies at the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies at University of Bradford (United Kingdom).
Jia Yen has rich clinicial experiences in inpatient care at tertiary level hospital and also has provided outpatient Occupational Therapy services for Neurological, Orthopaedic, Geriatric, Oncological conditions since she started work in 2002. She has been paramount in spearheading a brand new Occupational Therapy community services for home rehabilitation for people with stroke namely Early Supported Discharge (ESD) Programme with the neurologists. Moreover, she has also helped in developing Total Lymphoedema Clinic (TLC) multi-disciplinary one stop clinic for people with lymphedema conditions due to oncological medical issues. Jia Yen also was involved as Co-investigator for the proposal of Healthcare Quality Improvement and Innovation fund and helped in the consultancy role for awarded funded project “LOw Vision Enabling Program (LOVE)” for persons with low vision and this program has since became the normal routine care for people with low vision. Jia Yen was roped in to help set up another new community programme for persons with dementia with the Psychogeriatricians and received fundings to deliver holistic services including occupational therapy home services to empower and support families to care for people with dementia in the community. This programme named G-RACE (Geriatric Psychiatric OutReach Asessment, Consultation and Enablement) eventually received annual funding since 2013 till now to provide psychiatric assessment and treatment for elderly with mental health conditions including dementia in the western cluster in Singapore.
Other than clinical work, Jia Yen was actively involved in teaching and academic roles as she taught occupational therapy students at Nanyang Polytechnic in 2010-2012 and at Singapore Institute of Technology in 2019. She was also invited to be guest lecturer in many Geriatric modules or programmes at National University of Singapore and other Polytechnics in Singapore. Moreover, Jia Yen was involved as core volunteer member for an international project of “Enhancing Healthcare Services for Aging Population in Yunnan, China” in Yunnan, China spanning 2015-2018. She was involved in planning, development of curriculum and training programme to upgrade skills, knowledge and practices of medical, nursing and allied health professionals from hospitals and health agencies in Kunming and other prefectures in Yunnan via cascade training. Jia Yen also got certified as a Singapore facilitator in “Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS)” in 2018 and had conducted AMPS workshops in 2019.
Clinical research interest includes occupational therapy, neurological rehabilitation, dementia, built environment and design, geriatric rehabilitation, gerontology. Jia Yen had widely been involved in oral presentations at conferences in Occupational therapy conferences, at neurological rehabilitation conferences, dementia conference and rehabilitation conferences. Journal publications include use of the Australian Therapy Outcome Measures for Occupational Therapy in an Early Supported Discharge (ESD) programme and the relationship of the built environment with the older persons in Singapore. She had been awarded best oral presentation for allied health at Singapore NHG Annual Scientific Congress 2007. Other notable awards of date include National University Hospital Allied Health Achievement Award in 2009 and highly esteemed Singapore National Day Commendation Award in 2016.
