Bio
Jessica Bell is a highly experienced post-doctoral fellow interested in; neuroblastoma childhood cancer initiation, RNA-binding proteins in post-transcriptional control and next-generation sequencing research. She is a skilled scientist, with a passion and adaptive approach to original research questions. "Long term, I want to lead research concerning causes of childhood cancer and if these cancer can be prevented or treated with less toxic drugs."
She did her BSc(Hons) (Immunology) and PhD (Paediatric Oncology -Neuroblastoma) at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Her PhD was funded by receiving the highly competitive and federally funded NHMRC PhD Scholarship. She did postdoctoral research at Martin Luther university and was awarded three internal grants and one prize for excellent publication record at the university, as well as receiving external funds from the Monika Kutzner Stiftung (Fellowship) in Berlin. In 2020 she moved back to Australia and the Children's Cancer Institute.
Highlights in her career include:
-showing for the first time that B-box domains in TRIM proteins, can function to ubiquitinate (similarly to RING domains). And remains one of the most published authors concerning TRIM16 function, from her PhD work.
-finding that IGF2BP1 has prognostic value in the childhood cancer neuroblastoma, including likely being part of 17q chromosomal gains. This was part of her postdoctoral research. Bell et al., Journal of Clinical Oncology 2015.
She has had two main career disruptions, due to maternity leave. She has had to work part-time at times during 2020-2022, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
