Career Trajectory
Bio
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Complutense University of Madrid (1992). Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering since 1998.
Postdoctoral stay in the Department of Metals and Metallurgical Engineering of The University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) for a period of two and half years (1994-1996). His research activity at UBC entitled "A Novel Approach to the Catalyzed Bioleaching of Chalcopyrite" and funded by Magma Copper Co., produced several publications and one international patent "Silver Catalyzed Bio-leaching Process for Copper Extraction from Chacopyrite Heap".
He worked as freeland consultant for Rayrock Minera Ltd. in Mina Iván (Antofagasta, Chile) for half a month in April 1996 on heap bioleaching of copper sulfide minerals.
He worked as metallurgist for BHP Copper Ltd. in San Manuel (Tucson, Arizona) for a period of one year (1997-1998) in a semi-pilot bioleaching project entitled "TEA leach project: Trace Element Assisted Bioleaching of Chalcopyrite".
Since 1998 he has been working at Complutense University of Madrid where he has held different teaching positions (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor) and management positions (Academic Secretary, Deputy Director and Head of Department). At present, he holds the position of Full Professor.
His research and professional activity has been focused in the field of Biohydrometallurgy and he has developed it in different research centres: Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering (UCM); Department of Metals and Materials Engineering (The University of British Columbia, Canada); BHP Copper Ltd. (San Manuel, Arizona); Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials (UCM).
He has participated in more than twenty research projects in various topics related to Biohydrometallurgy:
- Bioleaching of mineral ores: In this field, he has worked with different raw materiales, including low-grade ores, mineral sulfide concentrates and industrial residues. His undergraduate research, and later his postdoctoral research, focused on the silver-catalyzed bioleaching of sulfide minerals in which different mining companies (Magma Copper Co., BHP Ltd.) showed interest. His PhD research focused on the bioleaching of a low-grade uranium ore in close collaboration with ENUSA. Furthermore, he has been involved in the biodesulphurization of coals and the biodephosphorization of iron minerals under oxidizing conditions. He has also worked in bioreduction processes of iron and manganese compounds exploring the possibility of biotreating its natural ores such as jarosites and gossan using bacterial cultures from mining environments.
- Biosorption: In this field, he worked in a European project “Biometal Demo” investigating the decontamination of industrial wastewaters containing heavy metals by a biosorption process with the aim of developing industrial plants based on this biotechnology. Previous to the treatment of real effluents, simulation with multimetallic synthetic solutions were perfomed in a semi-continuous system with fixed bed columns. A demonstration semi-pilot plant was built to confirm the benefits of the bioadsorption process compared to conventional procedures unable to eliminate heavy metals at low concentrations.
- Natural attenuation of soils contaminated with mining residues: In this case, studies focused on bioremediation of soils via bioaugmentation and biostimulation. In addition, the use of (bio)surfactants for the bioremediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals.
- Systems of power generation: attemps in the analysis of chemical-biological interaction phenomena for iron has been done to understand the biological mechanisms involved in this process.
- Biosynthesis of nanometals: In this line of research, attempts have been led to develop methods to produce metallic nanoparticles (silver, gold) using different organic extracts, including food industry wastes, plant wastes, seaweeds. The main objective was the development of more ecological and low-cost production techniques as an alternative to the physical and chemical methods currently used.
- Synthesis of iron biogenic compounds with environmental applicability: In this case, bioproduction of iron compounds (jarosites, goethite) of nanometric size has been accomplished using the knowledge acquired in the bioleaching branch. These biogenic compounds have been used in the decontamination of wastewaters loaded with heavy metals using both in-situ and ex-situ procedures.
As a result of his research activity, he has more than 150 publications in international and national journals of high impact and in book chapters, and more than 60 contributions to international and national conferences.
