My area of expertise concerns the physiology of crop adaptation and yield. My current research focuses on crop adaptation to climate uncertainty with emphasis on genetic adaptations to high temperatures and water deficits. Our lab ecophysiological models to test hypotheses related to crop responses and to assess potential impacts of climate on productivity. Recognizing that access to high quality data is essential for model evaluation and improvement, we are strong proponents of efforts to improve management of research datasets via data standards and supporting software tools and to strengthen field research via proximal sensing. Our research includes developing novel methods for field-based, high-throughput phenotyping, especially for complex traits such as heat and drought tolerance. Current phenotyping research involves wheat, common bean, sorghum, cotton and sunflower.
