Bio
Jeffery A. Stern received the B.S. degree in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA, and the Ph.D. degree in applied physics from California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA, in 1983 and 1991, respectively.
During his tenure at JPL, he has been involved with superconducting sensors. Currently he is working on THz technology including phonon cooled NbN mixers on thin 2–6$\mu{\hbox{m}})$ SOI wafers and THz frequency waveguide components fabricated using lithographic techniques. He is also working on superconducting nanowire single photon detectors based on both NbTiN and more recently amorphous ${\rm WSi}_{\rm x}$. Previously, he fabricated, tested and space qualified superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer chips for band 5 (1140–1250 GHz) of the HIFI instrument on the Hershel Space Observatory. He also worked on several tasks including NbTiN and Nb based SIS mixers under funding from NASA. Since 2001, his is Senior Member of the Technical Staff, JPL.
