个人简介
Jean van den Elsen is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Bath. His research focuses on the structural and physico-chemical characteristics of proteins that determine the elemental struggle between pathogenic microbes and the immune system of the host.
His research concentrates on complement evasion proteins from Staphylococcus aureus. Detailed knowledge of the three-dimensional structures of these proteins and their complexes with complement proteins are invaluable for a better understanding of microbe-host interactions and the development of rational strategies for the treatment of complement mediated diseases. Work from his laboratory has revealed the details by which S. aureus protein Sbi inhibits complement by causing fluid phase consumption of central complement component C3. He and his co-workers have also shown that Sbi interferes with the crucial link between the innate and adaptive immune systems by inhibiting the complex between complement fragment C3d and complement receptor 2 (CR2). A recent crystal structure of this complex, published in the journal Science, enables the rational design of therapeutic compounds for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and the development of novel vaccines.
