Bio
After obtaining an MD degree from the ‘Université catholique de Louvain’ in 1972, Jean Delbeke specialised in neuropsychiatry including a residency in the clinical neurophysiology research lab (Prof. A. McComas) of the McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. He started a career in clinical neuropsychiatry, neurology and quickly focalized on neurophysiology (EMG, EEG, evoked potentials) while taking a complementary degree in biomedical engineering. Interest in the field of volume conductor modelling resulted in collaborations with the Departments of Neurology and Medical Physics, University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. After a PhD on ‘The electrical stimulation of the human optic nerve’ at the Neural Rehabilitation Laboratory of the ‘Université catholique de Louvain’ he remained attached to the same university, as a researcher and temporarily as a part time ‘Chef de Clinique’ in neurophysiology at the St Luc Hospital in Brussels-Woluwe. For the engineering department, he gave courses on ‘bioinstrumentation’ as well as on ‘artificial organs and rehabilitation’. He participated actively or coordinated European research projects on active neural implants for human motor and vision rehabilitation such as NeuralPro, MIVIP, OPTIVIP, SENS, IMANE. He was a main contributor to ADVENS, a Walloon Region project for the development of an innovative vagus nerve stimulation system for the treatment of epileptic patients. He was one of the founders of the spin-off company NeuroTech SA that obtained the CE marking for that new vagus nerve implantable stimulator. This company has now been sold to the Sorin Group (active in the field of cardiology) for which Jean Delbeke still provides advisor services. Since retirement from the ‘Université catholique de Louvain’ in 2012, he has also remained active as an academic consultant at the laboratory for neurophysiology of the University of Ghent, and as a reviewer for research projects of the European Commission. His main interest is the neural interface, implantable electrodes and engineering aspects of electrophysiology, particularly in broad multidisciplinary perspectives. He has participated to numerous publications and patents on these topics.
