Career Trajectory
Bio
I am a medical Doctor, holder of a master's of Science degree in Public Health. I worked as a full-time clinician from 2001 to 2011 and joined the research field and I am currently a Senior Scientific Officer and medical doctor at the Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC), in Zambia. I have been actively involved as an investigator in a number of malaria research projects including clinical trials. I was an investigator in the PREGCAT study that evaluated the safety and efficacy of Artemisinin-Based Combinations (ACTs) for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy among African pregnant women. This was the first large clinical trial on ACTs in pregnancy that involved 3428 pregnant women with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in four African countries (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, and Zambia). I was also a part of the ADAPT study research team that assessed the safety and efficacy of ACTs in people living with HIV who are on tntiretroviral treatment (ART) in three African countries (Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia). In line with my previous work, I designed, obtained funding and ethical and regulatory authority approvals for a randomized controlled trial investigating a novel malaria chemoprevention in pregnancy (IPTp-SP plus) funded by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP). I am currently the PI of the EDCTP-sponsored IPTp-SP Plus (PACTR201905721140808) and the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute-sponsored PHARCIDE (NCT04009343) trials which further evaluate malaria treatment regimes in Zambia. In addition, I am a part of the Southern and Central Africa International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research, an NIH funded multicenter project through the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Since 2019, I have been the head of the clinical sciences department at the Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC). This department has two units dedicated to clinical research and clinical services that I oversee.
My experience in malaria clinical research and epidemiological studies further includes a background conducting of malaria clinical trials including antimalarial drug’s safety and efficacy assessment, antimalarial therapeutic efficacy, and parasite resistance monitoring and malaria control measures impact assessment through epidemiological and entomological studies. In addition to maaria I have also a track record on maternal and child health program and research.
