Bio
Jaydee Cabral is a Research Associate Professor in the Microbiology and Immunology department at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University, USA in 2000. She was a visiting lecturer at California State University, Stanislaus in 2000-2002, and at California State University, Monterey Bay in 2003-2008. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Chemistry department at the University of Otago in 2009-2010, a Research Fellow in 2011, and Senior Research Fellow from 2012-2021. Her research applies a multidisciplinary approach to the development and characterization of medical devices, biomaterials, and bioengineered scaffolds. She played a key role in the development of an FDA-approved, commercialized chitosan/dextran-based hydrogel, Chitogel, as a post-operative surgical aid in the prevention of adhesion formation in ENT surgeries. She utilizes polymer synthesis, chemical and physical characterization techniques, microbiological analysis, as well as in vitro mammalian tissue culture and in vivo mouse models. Her laboratory possesses advanced 3D bioprinting technology, the GeSIM 3.1 Bioscaffolder. She was awarded a Health Research Council Explorer and Lottery Health funded grants to develop 3D bioprinted vascularized, regenerative 'living dressings' for the treatment of chronic wounds. She is interested in increasing biomaterial/bioink multifunctionality for the delivery of adult stem cells, among other cell types; using a variety of 3D printing techniques in order to make more in vivo-like 3D constructs for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering purposes. Her current MBIE funded Smart Ideas project is to develop a novel medical device for drug delivery to the inner ear to treat hearing loss. She was recently awarded a RSNZ Catalyst Seed grant to 3D print nipple areolar complexes for breast cancer patients in collaboration with the University of Maryland, USA.
