Javier F. Bárcena, PhD is a researcher at IHCantabria who focuses his work on numerical modelling and methodology development within the field of estuarine hydrodynamics and water quality. He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Cantabria, carrying out his last year at Technische Universiteit Delft, Netherlands. After graduating, he studied an MSc in Environmental Management of Aquatic Systems at the Universidad de Cantabria.
He obtained a FPI scholarship (BES-2010-032763) associated to the research project QEST (CGL-2009-10620), where he collaborated and performed his Doctoral Thesis entitled "Development of a methodology for environmental risk zoning generated by the discharge of industrial wastewaters in estuarine areas", being Extraordinary Doctoral Award from the Universidad de Cantabria 2017. In 2019, he obtained the Mobility stay abroad “José Castillejo” for young doctors 2018 (CAS19/00357) to determine areas of accumulation of floating marine litter in estuaries at MARETEC, University of Lisbon.
Javier has participated in several contracts with the Administration and companies and in competitive R+D+i projects. He is also staff member of the Estuarine Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA), the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) and the European Geosciences Union (EGU). His activity resulted in the following achievements and publications: 2 research periods, 16 SCI papers (16 Q1, 9 of them D1) with 305 citations (Scopus) and h-index 13 (Scopus), and 22 conference talks (9 internationals). Dr. Bárcena is also supervising 1 PhD thesis and supervised 1 MSc thesis.
The main lines on which he is focused:
• Designing and executing field campaigns in estuaries and analyzing the data collected
• Developing and applying advanced numerical models and mathematical tools based in machine learning for the calculation of hydrodynamics and water quality in coastal areas
• Providing novel methodologies for the implementation of Regulations in the field of coastal water policy
• Analyzing the influence of environmental variability in hydrodynamics
• Deepening the study of the processes that govern the transport and mixing of any substance in estuaries
