As an esteemed scholar and internationally renowned researcher, Kim is one of the leading authorities in the field of composites, nanocomposites and nanostructured energy storage materials. He has pioneered in the development of multifunctional composites reinforced with 2D and nanocarbon materials for high strength/toughness, high conductivities, polymer dielectrics, EMI shielding, flexible electronics, sensors, self-cooling aerogels for buildings, and emerging rechargeable batteries/supercapacitors. He presented more than 80 plenaries, keynote and invited lectures on these topics in leading international conferences and symposia.
In recognition of his scholarly achievements and outstanding contributions to professional societies, Kim has been elected as fellows of prestigious academy and learned societies, including the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science (HKAES), the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Among the most gratifying worldwide recognitions of his achievements are that the AD Scientific Index 2023 ranked him top #16 in the world in Mechanical Engineering discipline and #63 in Asia in the field of Engineering and Technology, while the 2023 Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists List identified him as the top 200 most influential scientist in Materials discipline in both career total and single year. Kim has been named Highly Cited Researcher for three recent years in Materials Science and Cross-field by Clarivate Analytics.
