Bio
Prof Jamie Goggins is a chartered engineer with more than 20 years of experience in consultancy, construction, expert advisory work and research on many projects worldwide, including in the areas of structural engineering, earthquake resistant structures, building design, structural health monitoring, marine renewable energy and infrastructure in developing countries. Effectively, as an engineer, he designs, creates, solves problems, innovates and uses maths and science to shape the world. To achieve this, he has built a multi-disciplinary team, which includes civil engineers, mechanical engineers, energy system engineers, architect and social scientist.
Prof Goggins is currently an Established Professor in the National University of Ireland Galway and Principal Investigator and member of the Executive Management team of the MaREI Centre, which has ca. 220 researchers and is the national research centre for Marine and Renewable Energy in Ireland. Within the MaREI Centre, he leads the Materials & Structures research group, which is one of 7 research groups in the centre. In NUI Galway, he leads a multi-disciplinary team, which includes civil engineers, mechanical engineers, energy system engineers and architects. He has a strong history of collaborating with industry and international research institutes on many research projects. Since 2005, he has author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He has been principal investigator on over 50 research projects in the past 10 years (total project value >€80M). He has won awards for both his research and teaching activities (greater than 20 awards) and was selected as one of 20 outstanding young scientists around the world under the age of 40 to participate in the World Science Forum held in Jordan in 2017.
Prof Goggins is actively involved in the engineering professional body in Ireland, Engineers Ireland. He served as an elected member of Council (2016-2020), a term as Chair of the West Region and is an interviewer for their Registered Titles. He is also a board member of the Civil Engineering Research Association of Ireland (CERAI) since 2012, having served as both President (2016-2018) and Chairperson (2014-2016). Together with his students, he undertakes many outreach activities with the local, national and international communities. For example, through the Engineering for Humanities programme that he established in 2009. Currently, he is the Chair of the Community University Sustainability Project board in NUI Galway, who developed the first two Sustainability Strategies for NUI Galway in 2017 and 2020, following a comprehensive and inclusive engagement process with the campus community.
