Prof. Ramsay is interested in the analysis of functional data, where the basic observation is a curve or a function.
My research interests are:
· Dynamic systems:
Models for how systems respond to changes in input. These models are often expressed as systems of ordinary or partial differential equations. I specialize in methods for estimating parameters defining such systems using noisy data distributed over time and space.
· Functional data analysis:
The analysis of samples of curves, images, or other types of functions. This field is described in our FDA web site, in the text Functional Data Analysis, Second Edition (2005) co-authored by Bernard Silverman, and in the text Functional Data Analysis with R and Matlab (2009) co-authored by Giles Hooker, and Spencer Graves.
Applications of FDA that I've been involved in include speech production, handwriting, juggling, psychometrics, human growth, econometrics and weather prediction. See our new book on applications of FDA, Applied Functional Data Analysis also published by Springer-Verlag , in 2002.
