I hail from a small rural town in South-eastern Ontario, Canada, moving to the city of Victoria, British Columbia (BC) in my late teens to undertake a bachelor's degree in Marine Biology at the University of Victoria. In my final year I spent 4 months in Bamfield, BC at a marine station in an intensive field marine science program.
I have had a varied career in marine science starting in Canada as a research assistant studying local phytoplankton community composition and investigating the physiological and chemical mechanisms of harmful algal bloom forming species associated with finfish kills; torsion and the evolution of derived feeding structures in marine gastropods; magneto-orientation and navigation by salmonid fishes; and the characterisation, enumeration and taxonomy of marine vertebrates and invertebrates from hydrothermal vents along the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge.
After moving to Australia in 2000, I worked in the Western Australian university sector and state government in marine field research, animal husbandry and lab management, specifically in areas of water quality, marine benthic invert and micro-zooplankton taxonomy, terrestrial zoology and aquaculture before joining CSIRO in 2007.
My research interests include environmental and physical forces that enhance and/or constrain the potential for primary producers to undertake photosynthesis, in particular tidal influences on the PAR (Photosythetically Active Radiation) light climate and nutrient dynamics in both the pelagic and benthic soft sediment habitats. I received a Master of Philosophy from the University of Western Australia in 2020 for my research on the biological oceanography of the Southern Kimberley coast in the north of Western Australia.
