个人简介
Prof. James Loughman has a specific academic and research interest in preventive eye health interventions for the most common causes of blindness and visual impairment including age-related macular degeneration, diabetes, refractive error and glaucoma. Since October 2008, Prof. Loughman has been seconded to a senior research management role, as Director and Principal Investigator of two Africa based international development projects, the Mozambique Eyecare Project (www.mozeyecare.org) and the Human Resources for Eye Health initiative, and as Principal Investigator of a national eye health systems project (Glaucoma Care in the Community), a glaucoma clinical trial (Macular Pigment and Glaucoma Trial) and a contact lens development trial (Polysoft Comfort Trial). Prof. Loughman has published thirty three articles in leading peer reviewed journals, over seventy peer-reviewed presentations and posters, numerous scientific letters and commissioned articles, and been invited to chair and deliver keynote speeches at various international conferences, as well as delivering continuous education lectures to healthcare professions. Prof.Loughman has secured in excess of €4.6 million in research funding since 2007, and is currently collaborating with numerous international academic, research and corporate partners to revolutionise eye health systems, develop preventive health technologies and systems, and build eye health capacity through international development.
The successes these varied initiatives have led to his appointment as Honorary Research Fellow at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, and as Honorary Professor at Dublin Institute of Technology.
In 2009, Prof. Loughman established and continues as Director and National Chair of the Irish registered charity,Optometry Giving Sight (Registered Charity: CHY19004), which specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error (URE). Prof. Loughman’s ambitions for the charity are (1) to provide an unprecedented opportunity for Optometry in Ireland (North and South) to make a coordinated and significant impact in the prevention of blindness, and (2) to support projects directed to the prevention and/or correction of refractive error in eyes as a cause of avoidable vision loss and blindness, thus relieving poverty and advancing education for the benefit of communities.
