I am interested in how cellular metabolism influences and mediates the microenvironment within inflammatory, infectious and progressive neoplastic diseases. Identifying the main mechanisms that link bioenergetics and mitochondrial dysfunction to the exacerbation of such diseases, and how these can be therapeutically targeted, is one of my main research interests. Another research interest is examining the molecular links between cellular metabolism and the main molecular drivers that promote disease progression, in particular the mechanisms employed by different metabolic pathways to signal with key cellular processes such as inflammation and oxidative stress; I am particularly interested in the role iron plays in these processes. Specifically, I have recently published the use of the iron chelator, DFX, as a potential adjunctive therapy for the treatment of Mtb-infection; I have shown that iron chelation can therapeutically 'switch on' glycolytic metabolism and support immunity during Mtb infection. A recent SFI-TIDA award of my own has also expanded on this and is now examining if adjunctive iron chelation supplementation can increase the efficacy of current tuberculosis drugs against resistant strains of tuberculosis.
Throughout collaborative research, I like to compare the link between energy metabolism and these cellular processes from one disease ailment to another. From these collaborative research ventures, I also endeavour to facilitate in the tailoring and development of targeted therapies that link these processes for potential clinical and commercialisation utilisation. Moreover, I endeavor to expand all aspects of such research and get involved in the development of bench-to-bedside biomedical devices with potential diagnostic and prognostic utility for the tailoring of personalised medicine.
