Water Quality: Extensive experience related to impacts of pollution (particularly metals, nutrients and pesticides) on water resources including; design of monitoring programmes; field-based water quality sampling; water quality data interpretation and risk assessment studies and derivation and interpretation of water quality guidelines.
Aquatic Ecology: In depth knowledge of ecosystem processes in lentic and lotic systems and application and execution of biomonitoring protocols (e.g. SASS, IHAS, FRAI etc.) in ecosystem health assessment.
Ecotoxicology: Use of lab bioassays, in-situ bioassays and microcosm (artificial stream) experiments in assessing the impacts of pollutants on aquatic ecosystem health.
Risk Mitigation: Assessing the effects of landscape features, land management and risk mitigation options (e.g. buffer zones, vegetated ditches, constructed wetlands) that influence the input and transport of nonpoint source pollutants into water resources.
Catchment Scale Modelling: Modelling the impacts of land use and nonpoint source pollution on water quality through use of a range of land use analysis techniques, including Geographical Information Systems (GIS), export coefficients (including the derivation thereof) and hydrological and water quality models (i.e. Soil Water Assessment Tool – SWAT).
Water Footprinting: Calculation of agricultural crop water footprints (blue, green and grey) and application in virtual water trading scenarios.
