Bio
Research in the Stockand laboratory focuses on ion channels and ion transport. We are particularly interested in the proteins involved in controlling ion movement into neurons and epithelial cells. The prior is important to excitability and how central neurons signal to each other and how peripheral neurons allow us to sense our environment. Ion channels in the kidney play a central role in controlling blood pressure as they set circulatory volume and the water and electrolyte content of plasma. We focus on understanding biologically important mechanisms that affect physiology. The lab has a long publication history on the mechanisms of regulation, structure-function relations and physiologic function of Deg/ENaC ion channels, in which we have employed electrophysiology, live-cell optical/fluorescence imaging, biochemical and molecular biological approaches, as well as contemporary molecular genetics and assessment of renal function, blood pressure and behavior in live animals.
