Bio
Jaime MORANTE CARRIEL, obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental and Applied Biology at the University of Alicante in Spain in 2012. He completed his doctoral thesis at the Plant Proteomics and Functional Genomics (PPFG) Research Group in the Department of Agrochemistry and Biochemistry, under the direction of Dr. Roque Bru Martínez, entitled Functional analysis of polyphenol oxidases (PPO) in loquat fruits (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.): development and application of molecular and proteomic tools. In 2014 he completed his postdoctorate at the PPFG group at the University of Alicante, in the project Strategies for Increasing Production and Diversification of Stilbenes and Flavolignans in Plant Cell Cultures (BIO2011-29856-CO2-02), involving in addition to several Spanish research groups from Universities of Barcelona, Murcia and Salamanca. During his staying the PPFG group, Dr. Morante contibuted to improving the production of stilbenoids in cell cultures of grapevine, in the application of OMICS tooIs for the rational study of the biosynthesis of stilbenes, in cIoning and molecular characterization of genes of interest, stilbene synthase, resveratrol- and orcinol-O-methyltransferase, and tau-class glutathione-S-transferase, and gene expression analysis by quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR), demonstrating excellent skills in laboratory work. For the next three years he will stay as Distinguished Researcher at the University of Alicante, awarded with a Maria Zambrano grant from Ministry of Universities of Spain and Next Generation program of the European Union. In the last 10 years, Dr. Morante has directed six research projects: two financed by the National Secretary of Higher Education Science, Technology and Innovation (Senescyt) of the Government of Ecuador in public calls and four financed by competitive research funds of the State Technical University of Quevedo in Ecuador. He has also participated as a researcher/collaborator in different projects of Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (BIO2011-29856- C02-02; BIO2014-51861-R; BIO2017-82374-R and PID2020-113438RB-I00), a project of Spanish Ministry of Economy and competitiveness (PEJ-2014-A-90762 / PEJ-2014-P-00289), and Vice-Rectorate for Research, University of Alicante (VIGROB-105). Dr. Morante has received scholarships and awards for his research work in Ecuador and Spain. The relevant contributions from Dr. Morante are summarized in book publications (3), chapters (2), and peer-reviewed articles (24) available at https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7439-4784. These publications are related to: 1) Martínez-Márquez, A.; Morante-Carriel, J.; Palazón J.; Bru-Martínez R. His recent research is focused on discovery and characterization of biosynthetic genes of complex monomeric antitumoral stilbenes. The metabolite, protein and transcript qualitative and quantitative data acquired will be analysed using a proper workflow of pathway-based integration. Thus, correlation, clustering and multivariate analysis using state-of-the-art statistical and software tools will be carried out for a first level MOI data analysis, and pathway mapping and co-expression analysis in a second level MOI analysis. As a result, expect to identify additional sets of genes likely involved in metabolic steps of stilbene biosynthesis in Morus alba and also candidate regulatory genes from different gene families.
